Dwarf hamsters are tiny, cute animals that make fantastic pets for just about anyone, especially children and families. They fit in the palm of your hand, they are inexpensive and if you train them when they are young, they will be your buddy for life!

Wet tail [27 Dec 2007|08:15pm]

Can dwarf hamsters get wet tail? Some sources say they can, some say they can't.

And . . . does anyone use this community anymore? The last 3 posts are all me, from several months ago.

Hamster wheel at night- solutions? [22 Aug 2007|11:25pm]

What are some things that you guys have done to deal with the hamster wheel while you are sleeping? The hamster has to stay in my room in order to keep him safe from my cat. I swear, my hamster doesn't want to run until the lights go out- and then he doesn't want to stop!

Can I feed this to my hamster? [22 Aug 2007|10:21pm]

I have an adorable little Chinese Dwarf hamster named Hermes.

So yesterday, in a bout of haste, I accidentally bought rabbit food instead of hamster food. It's the Bonzana Bouti-Buffet. The bags look almost exactly the same except for the animal pictured on the front. The ingredients are also virtually the same except for sunflower seends, pumpkin seeds, almonds, barley, raisins, and peanuts (which are in the hamster food and not the rabbit food), and navy beans (which replace the pinto beans that are in the hamster food. Could I buy some the missing ingredients (salt-free, of course) and mix them in with the rabbit food so I could feed it to my hamster? Or could I mix it in with the hamster food I have left?

I also wrote the company with this question.

I just saved a hamster from the streets of Seattle. There was a homeless guy on Broadway who wanted to eat her! I traded him a  an actual meal for her. I have never had a hamster before, so any and all, advice would be appreciated. I love her already. She's so cute and tiny. Her name is Zoe.

By the way, would it be a good idea to buy a heating pad and set it under her cage on low? I hear hamster's like to be warm.

Little dwarf hamsters need help in CA! [24 May 2006|07:57am]

_unsure
Can anyone in the San Francisco, CA area take on some dwarf hamsters? I found this ad for free hamsters - to quote:

"One of my male dwarf hamsters got into the cage with all of the other females and got them all pregnant. Thus the horde of Dwarf Hamsters have arrived. I am giving them away for free because they are much more bothersome than I can afford and if I could I would pay someone to take them away... I know what people may want little rodents for so for food or for pets, please take them."

I contacted the poster and she said she has approximately 25 at the moment, ranging from 2 weeks old (those she would give away with the mother) to 4 months and beyond. I really don't want to see them end up as snake food, so please pass this on. (Also, if you're somewhere on the way between San Francisco and Los Angeles and think you could give a good home to one or more, please comment about that too, just in case I'm able to make it up there this weekend.)

Thank you!

Henwrinkle, my hamster, seems depressed. First, he was an active fellow, escaping his cage three times in one week. Now he stops at random times in his hamster ball. He just stands there, and stares, as if he's frozen. It lasts like ten to fifteen minutes, sometimes a little bit longer. Sometimes we have to provoke him until he gets out of this.

I'm worried about the little guy. Does anyone know what might be wrong with him, and what we should do about it? I'm afraid he has diarrhea, and he might pass.

Has anyone ever encountered situations where their hampsters have climbed across the top of their cages upside down? We recently switched out panda bear hampster to an all metal cage instead of a glass tank. The tank was too short for him and he would climb up and hold onto the wire mesh and crawl around. I used to have a mouse that did the same thing, but he was MUCH smaller. Panda will now climb up the sides of the cage and crawl around the ceiling, stopping to do chin ups as he runs along.

He wont do this if anyone is watching mind you, he waits until about 3am and then he runs until about 5. At times his little arms will give out and he will fall with a thud to the bedding below. It doesnt seem to hurt him because he just gets right back ot business climbing again. Has anyone else had this happen and/or is this typical?

Its hard to get a picture because he will stop if he knows someone is watchingCollapse )

The Hamster Central Article and Literature Contest!

This is the second official contest in the history of Hamster Central. This time it will be a bit more challenging then the last, it will require some creative writing, originality, and research! Yes as you read this is the Hamster Central Article and Literature Contest - your chance to have your work featured on the website!

The contest will have three different categories,

1. Information Article: can be on a specific aspect of hamsters: care, health, genetics, products etc - (something either not covered on HC yet, or even something that is already covered but not in great detail). These articles have to present facts and be unbiased.

2. Article about hamster care based on writer's own experience - i.e. a case study of an ill hamster, recipes for homemade hamster treats, homemade cages or toys etc. These articles can be more personal and express the writer's own opinion.

3. Our final category invites you to create a fictional story, song lyrics, or poem with a hamster theme. Let your imagination flow. Show off those creative writing skills

Introducing Hamstercentral.com [23 Feb 2005|09:44am]

crypticvitality
Introducing www.HamsterCentral.com!!!

I admit it’s still a working progress but it’s coming along great so far!! I am proud to offer a great site about hamsters with in depth information as well as offer a discussion forum! Iv still got a few things to write for the page but its all pretty much there and coming together.

I have been slaving away at my computer editing various topics on Hamster Central and countless over rights on the ftp program I think I have done a good job in organizing the site.

The "Ailments" page is in progress, I have had someone kind enough to write that information for me and they will acknowledge for it when they did and have done :)

I still need some help though, Favors I am looking for now are as fallows.

  1. Images~ Clear photos of Syrians, Campbell’s, the Winter Whites the Chinese and the Roborovski. And any other cute little photos that are clear one may have that would like nice someplace on the site. As well as clear and close up images of a well set up wire, plastic and aquarium cage. Pictures of baby hamsters in their growing stages from birth

  2. proof reading ~ I still need to look over spelling and grammar, but besides that proofing to make sure the information is truthful and to suggest adding further information that should be added and providing those bits of information for me. The breeding section in particular.

  3. Articles ~ any helpful personal articles one may like to submit. For example soon I will be adding one about how to make a custom hamster cage from a bin. It could be anything helpful or neat like that. You will be acknowledged as the author of that article if you do of course. It is in essence your article juts on the Hamstercentral web site. If you ever wanted to make a small information site of your own, here is a good way without the headache of html and uploading.

  4. Participation on the forum.~ I have only had one person join. The forum is one part id really like to play a big role in the web site, I believe discussion is very important and often the best ways to learn more information and often time’s information from personal experience is the best. Although there aren’t many people now I would appreciate if people joined in support of my cause and participated. It will probably be a while until members build up and its active most the time, but I need to start someplace. The more people join the sooner it gets exciting!!

  5. Spread The Word!!.. If it wont get you in trouble spread the word about HamsterCentral.com and forum, the more people come I’m hoping the more will join my forum and actively participate. Tell hamster groups about it or perhaps other hamster LJ communities you may be apart of, tell your friends, tell forums you may be on :P

Thank you to all those who are and have supported my cause so far!
